Alpha and Omega Semiconductor's New 60V MOSFET Brings Major Improvements to Power Supply Designs

August 9, 2011

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 9, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Alpha and Omega Semiconductor Limited (AOS) (Nasdaq:AOSL), a designer, developer and global supplier of a broad range of power semiconductors, today announced the release of AON6242, the flagship device in its new 60V MOSFET portfolio. By leveraging major enhancements in device technology, this new device offers designers exciting new opportunities to increase overall efficiency by reducing the MOSFET switching and conduction losses in system power supplies. This product expands AOS's MOSFET portfolio and enhances its solutions for applications that require medium voltage MOSFETs, especially in the Telecom and Industrial segments.

The AON6242 offers an industry-leading figure of merit (RDS(ON) * COSS) of 1620mOhm-pF that is 48% better than the current leading competitor. The optimized MOSFET parameters reduce power losses with a combination of low on-resistance to reduce conduction losses, and low output capacitance to reduce switching losses. This new product is well suited for a wide range of applications that are pushing the limits of efficiency such as secondary side synchronous rectification in DC/DC and AC/DC converters, primary side switching in DC/DC converters, point of load (POL) DC/DC modules for telecom systems, motor drives, uninterrupted power supplies (UPS), and industrial automation tools. The AON6242 is available in the compact size DFN5x6 green package and is 100% Rg and UIS tested.

"The efficiency of system designs is highly dependent on the performance of the MOSFET in both switching and conducting modes," said Stephen Chang, Sr. Product Marketing Manager at AOS. "The very low COSS combined with very low RDS(ON) gives designers the boost in performance needed to meet energy efficiency standards and regulations."

Technical Highlights

  • 60V N-channel MOSFET in DFN5x6 package
  • RDS(ON) < 3.6 mOhms at VGS = 10V
  • RDS(ON) < 4.5 mOhms at VGS = 4.5V
  • COSS = 540 pF typ
  • Qg (4.5V) = 22 nC typ
  • Lowest RDS(ON) * COSS figure of merit in the market

Pricing and Availability

The AON6242 is immediately available in production quantities with a lead-time of 12-14 weeks. The unit price for 10,000 pieces is $0.83.
